FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: hulbert's restaurant announces sale and closure
EDMONTON, AB, July 16, 2009 - hulbert's restaurant operators Chris Martyniuk and Cameron Gertz announced today that hulbert's will cease its operations on Friday, July 31, 2009, following the sale of the profitable privately-held business to an undisclosed purchaser.

"Deciding to sell our business has not been an easy process," says co-owner Chris Martyniuk.  "But it came to be time for Cameron and I to move on to the next chapter of our lives.  The buyer approached with favourable terms and our consideration to sell was difficult but necessary."

The neighborhood restaurant opened in March, 2006 in Belgravia at 7601 - 115 Street and was designed as a coffee house featuring a deli and lunch counter.  Over its three year existence, hulbert's transformed its kitchen from offering just homemade soup and gourmet sandwiches, to offering a small but high quality selection of "up-tempo homestyle" entrees and shareable appetizers.  It also offered a Sunday brunch featuring live jazz.

hulbert's also established itself as one of Edmonton's cherished live music venues.  In the three years since opening, its reputation solidified as it became a favoured haven for the city's many talented singer-songwriter, folk, roots, and jazz musicians, and their dedicated fans.  It also featured Edmonton's first and only all-original songwriter's stage on Sunday nights, sponsored by Alley Kat Brewery (www.alleykatbeer.com).  The host, Rhea March (www.u22.ca), and hulbert's managers are actively seeking a new venue to continue operating the songwriter's stage.

"We feel very privileged to have been able to support and foster this city's vibrant music, visual, and literary arts communities -- we will miss this opportunity the most.  There are musicians who had their first public performance at our open stage, and their careers are now in full swing: they're hitting the charts and touring nationwide.  With the closure of hulbert's, we hope that other venues in Edmonton will awaken to the potential of operating as 'listening rooms,' where the art of performance and the craft of songwriting are central to the business," says Gertz.

"It has sincerely been a second-to-none experience, to be able to feed and entertain so many people in our little restaurant and to lend our support to such a wide range of artists and musicians.  We want to recognize and show our appreciation for our loyal clientele and our fantastic staff over the years, and everyone else who has helped us along our path.  hulbert's would have been nothing without your support!"

hulbert's last scheduled public concert will be on Thursday, July 30, 2009 at 8:00 P.M. MST featuring Jay Anthony Willis (www.jayanthonywillis.com).  A wind-up celebration is scheduled for Friday, July 31, 2009.  Full details are listed on the hulbert's website at www.hulberts.ca.
