hulbert's

a good place to meet

hulbert's Sunday Night Songwriter's Stage winds down
on Sunday, 19 July 2009

It has been a privilege to have hosted the Sunday Night Songwriter Stage for the past 2 ½ years, but like all good things, the run is coming to an end. We are down to our final two shows. New owners will take over on August 1st . While it is truly sad to loose a wonderful live music venue, Chris and Cameron are taking a well deserved break and I fully support them in their new ventures. It’s really not the end – but rather just the beginning.

I’m thrilled to announce that Samantha and Emily Schultz will be my special guest openers tomorrow and will perform for the first half hour of the songwriter stage (starting at 7:00 pm). As you may already know, Samantha has received a full scholarship into the music program at Berkley and will be leaving Edmonton to live in Boston for 4 years. She and Emily are two of the most genuine, exceptionally talented and gracious people I know.

I encourage you to come by hulbert's on Sunday July 19 and share in the music, celebration, laughter and tears as we begin to bid farewell to both Samantha and to hulbert's.

If you can’t make it in person, you can listen in live from the hulbert's website -- click the listen now link on the right hand sidebar.

Please email us with your messages or use the form below, and we will read them on air live as they come in.  Thank you all for your incredible support of the Sunday Night Songwriter's Stage!

You made it one of the most welcoming, nurturing and reputable listening rooms in Edmonton.

Blessings All,

Rhea

1. hulbert's: a fond farewell
Dear Chris and Cameron,

Undoubtedly you are receiving a huge response to the news that hulbert’s is closing down, and what I am going to say is probably nothing different than what you’ve read already, but since you have provided this city (and, whether you know it or not, other parts of the world!) with such a rare gift for the past two and a half years, it is only fair now that you receive our gratitude in return.

I have to confess that I didn’t appreciate hulbert’s for what it was until I was far away, and now I cannot imagine it gone. I moved to England almost a perfect year ago to teach, and quickly discovered that in a situation where so much is new, even the smallest pieces of home can calm your nerves – and in my case, that small piece of home was the Sunday night open stage. With the time difference I couldn’t tune in live, and instead took to arriving at work early on Monday mornings, to sit alone in the office with a hot cup of tea and the previous night’s podcast playing on my school laptop. In that tiny, freezing cold office, it wasn’t the tea that kept me warm so much as the voices and applause and laughter of so many family and friends back home in Edmonton. I was blessed by shout-outs from the hulbert’s stage on several occasions, but not nearly so blessed as I was to be able to listen in to the Christmas show on December 21st, when I was feeling further from home and family than I have ever been. Unawares, you gave me one of the best gifts I could have received that Christmas. Imagine now how many others out there feel the same.

Not a single piece of what I have just described would have been possible if you had not created this opportunity, built this stage, encouraged this community, opened your hearts to the lives and the music of this city. I pray that, as you are closing this chapter and opening a new one, you may be as blessed by whatever comes to you next as we have all been in what you have brought us before. The echoes of hulbert’s will quietly continue long after the doors have closed. It is you who have created this beautiful sound.

Much love, prayers and best wishes for the future,
Jacqui Chesterton

3. So sad
Hello Chris, Cameron and Rhea,
Just got the news. Hulberts and the Sunday open stage will be missed from at least as far away as Ottawa. I am sure as one door closes, another will open. As Rhea's signature says "never stop believing in the magic of music". Thanks for warm welcome and best wishes to all. Tony
