It has been a privilege to have hosted the Sunday Night Songwriter Stage for the past 2 ½ years, but like all good things, the run is coming to an end. We are down to our final two shows. New owners will take over on August 1st . While it is truly sad to loose a wonderful live music venue, Chris and Cameron are taking a well deserved break and I fully support them in their new ventures. It’s really not the end – but rather just the beginning.
I’m thrilled to announce that Samantha and Emily Schultz will be my special guest openers tomorrow and will perform for the first half hour of the songwriter stage (starting at 7:00 pm). As you may already know, Samantha has received a full scholarship into the music program at Berkley and will be leaving Edmonton to live in Boston for 4 years. She and Emily are two of the most genuine, exceptionally talented and gracious people I know.
I encourage you to come by hulbert's on Sunday July 19 and share in the music, celebration, laughter and tears as we begin to bid farewell to both Samantha and to hulbert's.
If you can’t make it in person, you can listen in live from the hulbert's website -- click the listen now link on the right hand sidebar.
Please email us with your messages or use the form below, and we will read them on air live as they come in.

This perfect, hot summer's day was followed by the comraderie and fellowship of our community of musicians, and nothing could have been better. Thanks to everyone for sharing your time and talent, and a sincerely appreciative nod to guest host Tim Chesterton for covering for Rhea, who needed a break after spending 2 full days of volunteering with the fine performers in the U22 repertoire.
An absolutely incredible display of talent with an amazingly appreciative and supportive audience. Thank you all for sharing your time and your talent with us, and never stop believing in the magic of music...

EDMONTON, AB, July 16, 2009 - hulbert's restaurant operators Chris
Martyniuk and Cameron Gertz announced today that hulbert's will cease
its operations on Friday, July 31, 2009, following the sale of the
profitable privately-held business to an undisclosed purchaser.
"Deciding to sell our business has not been an easy process," says
co-owner Chris Martyniuk. "But it came to be time for Cameron and I to move on to the
next chapter of our lives. The buyer approached with favourable terms
and our consideration to sell was difficult but necessary."
The
neighborhood restaurant opened in March, 2006 in Belgravia at 7601 -
115 Street and was designed as a coffee house featuring a deli and
lunch counter. Over its three year existence, hulbert's transformed
its kitchen from offering just homemade soup and gourmet sandwiches, to
offering a small but high quality selection of "up-tempo homestyle"
entrees and shareable appetizers. It also offered a Sunday brunch
featuring live jazz.
hulbert's also established itself as one of Edmonton's cherished
live music venues. In the three years since opening, its reputation
solidified as it became a favoured haven for the city's many talented
singer-songwriter, folk, roots, and jazz musicians, and their dedicated
fans. It also featured Edmonton's first and only all-original
songwriter's stage on Sunday nights, sponsored by Alley Kat Brewery (www.alleykatbeer.com). The host, Rhea March (www.u22.ca), and hulbert's managers are actively seeking a new venue to continue operating the songwriter's stage.
"We feel very privileged to have been able to support and foster
this city's vibrant music, visual, and literary arts communities -- we
will miss this opportunity the most. There are musicians who had their
first public performance at our open stage, and their careers are now
in full swing: they're hitting the charts and touring nationwide. With
the closure of hulbert's, we hope that other venues in Edmonton will
awaken to the potential of operating as 'listening rooms,' where the
art of performance and the craft of songwriting are central to the
business," says Gertz.
"It has sincerely been a second-to-none experience, to be able to
feed and entertain so many people in our little restaurant and to lend
our support to such a wide range of artists and musicians. We want to
recognize and show our appreciation for our loyal clientele and our
fantastic staff over the years, and everyone else who has helped us
along our path. hulbert's would have been nothing without your
support!"
hulbert's last scheduled public concert will be on Thursday, July 30, 2009 at 8:00 P.M. MST featuring Jay Anthony Willis (www.jayanthonywillis.com). A wind-up celebration is scheduled for Friday, July 31, 2009. Full details are listed on the hulbert's website at www.hulberts.ca.
